Info + first impressions

from now on I'll mostly do my posts in aspect of a while-reading activity because I just started reading the book.
My first impressions:

  • in the beginning:strict, forced (contra)
  • after reading a few pages:safety, equality, protection, common weal, interested in a happy society, low crime rate(in aspect of homicide and theft) (pro)
  • influenced by a higher authority (the giver)
  • no individual development(everything is given and planned by a commitee if the giver consents)=all equal
  • rules-if you break up with the rules you wil be released
  • rule for example is that you are only allowed to have two children ,one male and one female;(choosen by commitee and nurtured by a "special department" ,the Nurturers)
  • emotional community (talk about their feelings after dinner)
  • divided in strata (divided in age, career and position in justice-administration)
  • different stratas have different functions

  1. Don't you think this rule "two children - a boy and a girl" is totally silly? I don't really understand why the committee makes that choice. Who's the Committee anyways?

  2. I think the comitee consist of some Elders (p.19/line 30f :"Of course the Elders are so careful in their observation and selection"+ p.18/line 31 "the Commitee of Elders"). I also think that there are several different comitees (p.17/line 38 "A(!) commitee was studying the idea")-the a is undefined.
I also think that this rule "two children-a boy and a girl " isn't erroneous because the community is buil up on equality and if every "family unit" has just two children- one boy and one girl it really fits into their system but otherwise i think this rule is silly but that refer on ma own social views, habits andeducation.I think for the Chinese politics it's not as erroneous because they have this "one-child-politics" even if they have many excpetions.
